Vertical Limit

Is there a vertical limit for a person's career?

I have this thought running in my mind since quite some time... A person grows in his career from an employee through middle management and senior management... and then the top jobs... and then??
Is this the vertical limit? What are the possible options after reaching a top job like CEO or president, etc. This thought is typically for a salaried person in top job and not a equity holder (who has options to diversify etc)

Assuming that there exists a vertical limit, what option would a person looking for self-actualization go for...

• Becoming an investor himself (vertical growth)
• Grow horizontally - media, politics, social networks, sports... (like Lee Iokoka)
• Switch the company !! (potential vertical growth)
